Augering Success With The Right Tool

It’s fascinating looking at a diy outlet catalogue.  for those of us not given to extremes of the hobbies ot there, we don’t get involved in the search for the perfect auger or mauls, mattocks or pick axes.  But there are folk out there who know their stuff and go the extra mile to get the best there is.  Most of us ask, what exactly is an auger anyway . . .  Well it’s actually a device that drills wood or any other materials by way of a rotating metal shaft with a blade at the end.  As the tool rotates, the blade cuts into the wood and thus forms the necessary hole.    It is actually a classical tool based on a helical screw blade winding around the bottom of the shaft.  The lower ege of the blade is shaped and scrapes the wood and the rest of the blade lfts the chips out of the way.  There is a T-shaped handle for which both hands are required to operate the tool.    As with all ancient ideas, modern additions incoude auger bits offering multiple blades in various positions to provide a wider selection of holes.  Who knew. . .
